Why E20 is not cheaper at the pump, MoPNG explains
What happened: In the same July 2026 FAQ cycle, MoPNG addressed a common driver question: if ethanol is blended into petrol, why didn't pump prices fall to offset any mileage change?
The ministry's cost argument (as reported)
- Domestically procured ethanol is often cited around ~₹71-72 per litre before taxes and handling (figures vary slightly by report).
- At international crude around USD 70 / barrel, MoPNG's FAQ line says E20 can be costlier to produce than pure petrol - not cheaper.
- Stated benefit of blending is framed as energy security / lower oil-import dependence and insulation from crude volatility - not a guaranteed retail discount.
- About 20% of every litre of regular petrol sold is domestically produced ethanol under the current blend.
KnowYourFuel does not set or verify daily pump prices. Prices vary by city and date. Treat the FAQ cost figures as policy explanation, not a live price feed.
What this means for your wallet
If mileage dips a few percent and the pump price does not fall by a matching amount, monthly fuel spend can rise. That is a maths problem you can estimate yourself - not a reason to panic or to assume engine failure.
- Run the E20 mileage & cost calculator with your km/month and local price.
- Compare ethanol-free premium fuel only if relevant: XP100 vs E20 and XP100 city guide.
- Confirm your vehicle cohort with the compatibility checker.
