MoPNG FAQ: E20 may reduce mileage by about 3-5%

What happened: Around 10 July 2026, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG) issued a fresh FAQ set defending the Ethanol Blended Petrol programme and answering persistent public questions on mileage, price and older vehicles. Multiple news outlets summarised the ministry's line that E20 "may reduce" mileage by about 3-5% in some cases.

This is a calm summary of publicly reported ministry positions. We separate official/lab ranges from owner surveys. We do not treat unverified social-media damage claims as fact, and we do not make personal allegations against officials.

What MoPNG's FAQ line clarifies

  • Mileage: A modest drop is acknowledged (commonly reported in coverage as about 3-5%). Separate ARAI/industry testing cited elsewhere often puts fuel-consumption change around ~2-6% depending on the vehicle.
  • Not 30%: Viral claims of a ~30% real-world mileage crash are rejected. That figure is typically confused with ethanol's lower calorific value - not measured tank-to-tank economy for a 20% blend.
  • Older vehicles: Manuals that mention E10 reflect the standard when the vehicle was certified; after regulatory clearance, MoPNG says that should not be read as "unsafe on E20" by default.
  • Engines: The ministry reiterates there is no evidence of widespread engine breakdowns from E20 in testing / rollout messaging. A materials caveat on some rubber fuel-system parts in older vehicles remains the practical service point.

Official range vs owner surveys

Lab and ministry-cited numbers are typically in the low single digits. Some owner surveys (self-reported) describe larger drops - those are not ARAI lab results. Use your own fill-up log for the truth on your vehicle.

What you can do today

  1. Check if your car or bike is generally E20-ready by year / make / model.
  2. Estimate the ₹ cost of a 3% or 6% illustrative drop (official-range chips).
  3. Log tank-to-tank mileage so you are not relying on WhatsApp numbers.
  4. Read our mileage guide and Myth vs Fact.
  5. For older vehicles, skim the service checklist (hoses, seals, filters).
