E20 vs XP100 - Is It Worth Switching?

Thinking of using ethanol-free XP100 to dodge the E20 mileage drop? XP100 costs a lot more per litre. This calculator does the honest math on whether any mileage gain actually pays for the premium.

For most everyday cars, higher octane gives little or no mileage gain. Start with 0%.

What is XP100 - and is it really ethanol-free?

XP100 is IndianOil's 100-octane premium petrol, and it is currently the only widely sold ethanol-free petrol in India. Other "premium" fuels - XP95, BPCL Speed 97, HPCL Power - are higher octane but still contain 15–20% ethanol, so they are not an escape from ethanol.

The honest verdict on mileage

Higher octane (like XP100) mainly benefits high-compression / performance engines. In a normal commuter car or bike, you may recover a little of the E20 mileage loss, but rarely enough to offset a price gap of roughly ₹60 per litre. Where XP100 can make sense: peace of mind for a cherished older vehicle, or genuine performance cars designed for high octane.
