Does E20 void your warranty or insurance?

Clear answer: No. Using E20 petrol does not void your vehicle warranty and does not invalidate your motor insurance in India. This has been confirmed by the government, the auto industry body SIAM, and insurers.

Why this became confusing

In June 2026, a private insurer's blog post suggested that E20-related damage in non-compatible vehicles could be treated as "negligence" and lead to rejected claims. It spread widely - and was then walked back. The insurer clarified that motor policies "remain fully valid" with E20 and that fuel type is not a factor in claim admissibility.

Insurance: what's actually covered

Motor insurance covers accidental damage, theft and third-party liability - based on insured events like an accident or theft. The fuel in your tank (petrol, E20, CNG, diesel) is not what determines whether a claim is admissible.

Important nuance: insurance covers accidents, not ordinary wear and tear. Gradual wear from any fuel - like a worn hose - is a maintenance item, not an insurance claim. That's true regardless of E20.

Warranty: what the industry says

SIAM has confirmed that manufacturer warranties will be honoured for vehicles using E20 fuel that meets prescribed specifications. Automakers have publicly stated E20 is safe for vehicles on the road today.

How to protect yourself (older vehicles)

  • Service at authorised centres and keep all records/receipts.
  • Use fuel from reputable pumps that meets BIS specifications.
  • If you own a pre-2023 vehicle, ask your dealer about E20 readiness and any retrofit kit.
  • Read your owner's manual section on fuel - it's the final word for warranty terms.

Frequently asked questions

Can an insurer reject a claim because I used E20?

No. Insurers have clarified that fuel type is not a basis for rejecting an admissible claim such as an accident or theft.

Will using E20 in an old car cancel my warranty?

No. SIAM confirmed warranties are honoured for vehicles using compliant E20 fuel. Wear-and-tear items remain normal maintenance, as with any fuel.
