What is E20 petrol?
E20 petrol is fuel made of 20% ethanol and 80% regular petrol. The "E" stands for ethanol and the number is the percentage of ethanol in the blend. So E20 = 20% ethanol, E10 = 10% ethanol, and E0 = pure petrol with no ethanol.
Quick answer: Since April 2025, E20 is the standard petrol sold at regular fuel stations across India - a network of over 1 lakh (100,000+) outlets. In July 2026 the government ruled out selling E10 or pure petrol alongside it, so if you buy regular petrol today, you're buying E20.
E0, E5, E10 and E20 explained
Ethanol is an alcohol-based fuel made mainly from sugarcane, maize and other crops. Blending it into petrol has been happening in India for years - the percentage has simply gone up over time.
| Blend | Ethanol | Petrol | Status in India |
|---|---|---|---|
| E0 | 0% | 100% | No longer sold at regular pumps |
| E5 | 5% | 95% | Older blend (phased out) |
| E10 | 10% | 90% | Previous standard (until 2025) |
| E20 | 20% | 80% | Current standard (from April 2025) |
Why did India move to E20?
The government's stated goals for the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) programme are:
- Energy security - cutting India's dependence on imported crude oil and saving foreign exchange.
- Farmer income - ethanol is made from Indian crops, creating demand for farmers.
- Lower emissions - ethanol burns cleaner, reducing some tailpipe pollutants.
India hit 20% blending in 2025, roughly five years ahead of the original 2030 target.
The E20 timeline at a glance
- 2001–2013: pilot projects and early 5% blending in select regions.
- 2018: National Policy on Biofuels expands ethanol sources.
- 2022: India reaches 10% blending (E10), ahead of schedule.
- March 2023: first E20-compliant vehicles go on sale.
- April 2025: E20 becomes the standard petrol nationwide.
Does E20 matter for my vehicle?
It depends mostly on when your vehicle was made:
- Made in 2025 or later: tuned for E20 - no action needed.
- Made April 2023–2024: E20 material-compliant - safe to use.
- Made before April 2023: designed for E10, but the government and manufacturers say E20 is safe to use. Expect a marginal mileage drop (officially ~3–6%) and possibly a one-time, inexpensive replacement of some rubber fuel-system parts during routine service.

Frequently asked questions
What is the full form of E20?
E20 isn't an abbreviation - the "E" means ethanol and "20" means 20% ethanol content. So E20 is petrol containing 20% ethanol and 80% petrol.
Is E20 the same as normal petrol now?
Yes. In India, the "normal" petrol sold at pumps since April 2025 is E20. You are not choosing it separately - it's the default.
Can I still get pure petrol (E0)?
Not at regular fuel stations. The government has ruled out large-scale parallel supply of E0/E10, which is a major reason many owners are asking for choice.
