E20 in July 2026: what Indian drivers need to know
Update for drivers: E20 (20% ethanol blended petrol) remains the standard petrol at regular pumps nationwide. This briefing summarises publicly stated positions from MoPNG, ARAI and SIAM - without alarmism.
What is settled
- Fuel at the pump: Regular petrol is E20. MoPNG has clarified there is no parallel E10 / pure-petrol retail option at scale.
- Mileage: Official / govt-cited testing is typically about 1-6% (sometimes cited as ~2-6% or ~3-5% in some vehicles). Owner surveys that self-report larger drops are not ARAI lab findings.
- Engines: Official testing has not reported widespread engine breakdowns from E20. Some rubber fuel-system parts on older vehicles may need earlier attention.
- Warranty / insurance: SIAM and manufacturers have publicly clarified that using E20 does not void applicable warranty or insurance for approved use.
What you can do today
- Check if your car or bike is E20 compatible by make, model and year.
- Estimate cost impact using an illustrative drop from the official range.
- Read Myth vs Fact for sourced answers to viral claims.
Ethanol-free option
The widely sold ethanol-free petrol remains IndianOil XP100 (premium, limited outlets) - not HP Power / BPCL Speed 97 / Shell V-Power, which still contain ethanol. Use our XP100 vs E20 calculator.
