E20 retrofit kits & service checklist
If your vehicle was made before April 2023, it was designed for E10 - not E20. You can still run E20 (it's what pumps sell), but a few low-cost precautions help protect the fuel system and keep mileage healthy. Here's what actually matters.
What is an E20 retrofit kit?
A retrofit or "upgrade" kit swaps the fuel-system parts most affected by ethanol for E20-compatible versions - typically fuel lines, hoses, seals, gaskets and O-rings. Some manufacturers have begun offering these for older models.
Reported pricing: Maruti Suzuki has indicated E20 retrofit/upgrade kits for cars up to ~15 years old at roughly ₹4,000–6,000. Availability varies by model - confirm with your authorised dealer.
Do you actually need a kit?
Not necessarily. Several automakers say existing vehicles do not require retrofitting and that modern engines have safety margins beyond basic E20 compatibility. So treat a kit as optional risk-reduction, most worth considering if:
- Your vehicle is quite old (roughly pre-2015) or high-mileage.
- You've noticed hard starts, rough idle or fuel smell.
- You plan to keep the vehicle for several more years.
The E20 service checklist
Whether or not you buy a kit, ask your service centre to check these at each service:
| Item | Why it matters on E20 | When |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel hoses & lines | Ethanol can degrade older rubber over time | Every service |
| Seals, gaskets, O-rings | Most ethanol-sensitive parts | Every service |
| Fuel filter | Ethanol can loosen deposits and clog filters | Per schedule / if symptoms |
| Fuel pump & injectors | Check spray/pressure if idle is rough | If symptoms |
| Spark plugs | Ensure clean, efficient combustion | Per schedule |
Simple habits that help
- Don't leave the tank near-empty for weeks (ethanol attracts moisture).
- Fuel from reputable pumps that meet BIS specifications.
- Keep up with tyre pressure and servicing - they affect mileage more than fuel type.
- Track your mileage so you notice real changes early.
